ANNUAL WITT REUNION-Saturday, June 2, 2002 |
|
This will be the tenth consecutive year that we have had this WITT Reunion...involving Witts from four branches but all descended from the WITT/DAUX lineage. My grandfather was William Jesse WITT and he and his brother John Witt are buried in Athens, Alabama, but part of his family, brothers and sisters wound up in Oklahoma, around Grand Field, Walters and Temple...some of the family remained in 'White County, Arkansas, Heber Springs. For many years my grandfather held an annual family reunion on his large farm outside Athens, but after his death we went for many years without a reunion. It seemed to me that the only time we saw family was when we came together to bury another member...from that I decided that we could resume the reunions...we did and broadened them to include the other branches of the family. We have had attendance ranging from 48 to 88 and it has been good for all who attend. All other distant WITT cousins are invited to attend if they are able to do so. The State park has excellent accommodations at the lodge and there are many motels in the area including one in nearby Rogersville. You are encouraged to bring photos, scrap books and appropriate memorabilia. Someone will probably have one or more copies of one of the WITT books now available. There is a fee charged by the state of Alabama to access the area where pavilion no. 3 is located...1.00 per person except over age 65 is .50 cents and under twelve is also .50 cents. Day use area fee (open 9 till sundown). Normally each family brings a covered dish and we have lunch at noon. Those coming from a distance usually pick up chicken from the KFC or Bar-b-que, or cokes and chips, etc. Some of the ladies still like to cook their "specialty" and bring it from home. Good food is never is short supply. If you do have the opportunity to attend, I think you will find a friendly and hospitable reception. Regards, John Lowell Harlan Grandson of William Jesse Witt-(EMAIL JHarlan62@aol.com for more information. Area events here) |
